About ME

Avid Learner, Gordon Scholar, Researcher, Software Enthusiast, and Humanitarian

My name is Eddie Tapia and I just graduated UC San DIego where I studied Mathematics-Computer Science. I am now pursuing a dual-degree Masters at Carnegie Mellon University in Computer Engineering and Technology Ventures.

I believe technology has the power to impact communities all over the world, beyond just the first world countries. As a result, I want to dedicate my life to bringing a civic mindset to engineering to solve the world's greatest challenges in communities that often get left behind.

2015

I love learning and creating products for others to enjoy.

Below are some of the other things I've been up to...

Reach Competition

I co-led the development of SHPE's 2nd annual Rising Engineers Advanced Challenge 2017 Competition and tripled our sponsorship from last year. REACh is a non-stop 24-hour competition, where students will get the opportunity to be drafted by some of the leading engineering companies. The competition last 24-hours, and in this time period, students will design, build, and market a project from scratch. It is judged by UCSD professors.

Shpe Empower High school conference

This year I led the coding workshop and had the students build their own computer! The conference invites high school students from the San Diego community to come to our campus to learn more about careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). We wanted to provide students with an insight on what engineering is really like so that they can one day pursue a career in STEM. We had over 160 high schoolers attend the conference last year.

vida medica in Ecuador (partnered with the nonprofit MEDlife)

During spring break in 2015, I got the opportunity to go to Esmeraldas, Ecuador to volunteer at a mobile medical clinic. The clinic travels to poor communities that do not have access to healthcare and provides them with dental, medical, and hygenic treatment. This was one of the best experiences of my life as I met some beautiful people in Ecuador and went with an amazing group of students from Alternative Breaks @UCSD.

PEI 2016 + 2017

I spearheaded PEI 2016 and helped organize PEI 2017 for our Jacobs School of Engineering. PEI is a joint event created by SHPE, SWE, and NSBE that gives our sponsors access to the next generation of talented, diverse UC San Diego engineers. Around 500 students registered for the event and we had 29 sponsors for PEI 2017. Our sponsors include Google, Facebook, Microsoft, NASA JPL, and Northrop Grumman
